Flavonoids consist of a large group of polyphenolic compounds having a benzo- -pyrone skeleton and are common constituent present in plants. Literature survey shows that secondary metabolites of phenolic nature including flavonoids are responsible for the variety of pharmacological activities like anti-oxidant, anti-microbial, anticancer, anti-diabetic, anti-HIV. Till date nearly about 131 flavonoids constituents including flavones, flavonols, flavanones, flavan-4-ols, isoflavones, isoflavans, petrocarpans have been isolated from 60 species of Astragalus genus. This led us to compile upto date isolated flavonoids isolated from Astragalus genus along with their recorded biological activities. This book will be very much helpful for the researcher working in the field of natural products chemistry. As this book quantifies the research on flavonoids of the genus Astragalus, it will also directs the future research on this important genus. Fabaceae or Leguminosae is a large and economically important family of flowering plants, which is commonly known as the legume family, pea family, bean family or pulse family. The name 'Fabaceae' comes from the defunct genus Faba, now included into Vicia. Leguminosae is an older name still considered valid, and refers to the typical fruit of these plants, which are called legumes. Fabaceae is the third largest family of flowering plants, behind Orchidaceae and Asteraceae, with 730 genera and over 19,400 species, according to the Royal Botanical Gardens. The largest general are Astragalus with more than 2,000 species, Acacia with more than 900 species, and Indigofera with around 700 species. Other large genera include Crotalaria with 600 species and Mimosa with 500 species. The species of this family are found throughout the world, growing in many different environments and climates. A number are important agricultural plants, including: Glycine max, Phaseolus, Pisum sativum, Cicer arietinum, Medicago sativa, and Arachis hypogaea, which are among the best known members of Fabaceae
With about 3000 species worldwide, Astragalus is considered as most diverse and polymorphic genus of the family Leguminosae (Fabaceae) divided into eight to ten subgenera and more than 245 sections. It is chiefly distributed in temperate and alpine zones of Himalayas. Some species are the source of commercial gum tragacanth however, some are medicinally important used in treatment of cancer, HIV infection, tumors of eyes, liver, throat, chest and back pain in US, china and India. Few species have been reported poisonous for both livestock (cattle & sheep) as it contains Nitrotoxin, Swainsonine and Selenium.
